(1808-1836)
Zanco may well hold the distinct honour of painting the very first ’Lone Star’ on a Texas flag. In 1835 he joined the ’First Volunteers at Lynchburg’, obtaining the duty of painting the design on the company's flag. (By trade, Zanco was a painter and farmer.)
Charles Zanco fought in the Battle of Bexar where he remained. He also served as an assistant to Major Robert Evans, head of ammunitions and firearms at the Alamo. Zanco was killed in the final siege and was the only Dane to die at the Alamo.
