Joe

(1813-15?)

According to William B. Travis’ diary, Travis ’wrote bond for J.W. Moore to sheriff indemnifying him to buy one Joe belonging to Mansfield’ in 1834. In February 1836, Joe accompanied Travis to Bexar and the Alamo. A faithful servant to Travis, Joe took up a rifle and followed Travis to the north wall of the Alamo on the morning of March 6, 1836. It was there he witnessed the death of the one he served. Quickly Joe took cover in one of the rooms of the mission. Joe stayed there, firing his rifle until Mexican soldiers burst in, one over-anxious soldier wounding Joe. Joe was then brought to Santa Anna along with Susannah and Angelina Dickerson. He accompanied them to the camp of Sam Houston. Joe was able to carry word of Travis' death to the family in Alabama in 1837. He was last reported seen in Texas in 1875. It is said he is buried in an unmarked grave in Brewster, Alabama.
